Mission Statement
Goals of the program:
To teach local high school youth how to grow food organically:: how to plant seeds, transplant and nurture young plants, how to protect plants from pests, and harvest the produce that has been grown.
To help participants develop a strong work ethic, through which they are able to add productively to group efforts, regardless of the tasks in front of them or the conditions of the day.
To meet and get to know youth from schools and neighborhoods other than their own. To learn about their relationships to this work and share the experience.
To offer a context through which youth will feel what it means to collaborate with others, helping to move forward as a team.
To provide participants with the opportunity to experience new foods created form the produce that is being grown and to understand the health values associated with eating such fresh, unprocessed foods.
To grow produce that will go to 4 local venues: a CSA U-pick, Congo Square Market, BJM's Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Snack Program, and the school lunch program at the Lehman Alternative Community School.
To help youth begin to see their involvement in this project as part of a greater movement (both national and world wide); a movement connected to food justice, self-empowerment, and health.
To learn something about the entrepreneurial activities associated with growing and selling produce.
